Understanding Electricity Saving Behavior of Rural Indigenous Communities in La Guajira Department, Colombia

Abstract: This paper focuses on identifying how indigenous populations in the upper and middle zones of the La Guajira Department in Colombia save electricity or follow a plan based on an energy policy. To explore this, a survey among seven communities with electricity in the upper and middle zones of La Guajira and a quantitative and observational analysis were conducted. Results show that indigenous communities do not practice a culture of electricity-saving such as, for instance, often failing to turn off idle applia… Show more

“…When analysing the willingness to show demand flexibility between people living urban and rural areas in general (H1), the finding that there is no difference between both living areas differs from findings for the context of energy savings with different levels of energy-related education and the lack of energy awareness measures being the main determinant for this observation (e.g., [9,10]). In our analysis, these differences seem to be less effective as differences in energy-related education and lack of energy awareness are less on average between people living in urban and rural areas in Germany.…”

“…This article ties to this study and investigates, whether the location of (co-)owners, i.e., living in a rural or urban context, has an influence on their flexibility behaviour. Underlying this research question is the finding that citizens living in a rural environment are showing a different behaviour than their counterparts living in an urban area in contexts such as energy saving (e.g., [9,10]).…”

“…The FOK elements from this finding commonly describe the lives of Orang Asli children, and they are consistent with the findings of Bedggood et al (2017), who discovered that most indigenous people have only basic electrical appliances such as bulbs, and other appliances such as stoves and refrigerators are limited. However, children are accustomed to seeing and utilising them without completely comprehending the importance of safety and energy conservation (Molina et al, 2018). The element of FoK can be used by the teacher to explain the topic of electricity.…”

“…Aeroponics can produce a higher yield of pesticidefree food, optimize the production space, provide a cleaner growing environment, and reduce serious environmental impacts that affect the climate, promote biodiversity, and improve the quality of life required by rural and urban inhabitants [7]- [10]. Currently, aeroponics is used in agriculture around the world [11], [12].…”
