Understanding Constraints and Facilitators to Salmon Angling Participation: Insights from Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract: Q1Atlantic salmon sport fisheries have declined remarkably in many countries and participation seems to correlate with salmon abundance. We investigated angling participation in the Atlantic salmon sport fishery in Norwegian rivers by incorporating facilitators for participation in a constraint-negotiation model. We conducted an Internet survey of Norwegian anglers yielding 3,635 responses (40% response rate). The structural model confirmed our hypotheses and supported the conceptual constraints-effects-mitiga… Show more

“…Catch is also strongly related to angler utility (Hunt et al., 2019), and lack of catch often constrains fishing activities and limits effort (e.g. Freudenberg & Arlinghaus, 2009; Post et al., 2008; Stensland et al., 2017). In line with previous case studies (e.g.…”

“…A positive destination image will lead to a stronger psychological attachment to the destination, and we suggest the following hypothesis: H6: Image has a direct positive effect on place attachment Moreover, we hypothesize that the factors will not only have a direct effect on each other, but also indirect effects (see e.g. Stensland et al, 2017). Image will have an indirect effect on Loyalty via Place Attachment (H7) and Satisfaction (H8).…”

“…Korotkov et al [24], likewise, defined leisure facilitators as the facilities that help access the activities for participation and leisure satisfaction. That is to say, if an individual participates into an activity he/she definitely possesses some facilitating factors and if he/she cannot participate into an activity he/she must be facing some personal, interpersonal or structural constraints [13,25]. If we are to formulate the leisure facilitators and constraints, the formula can be stated as 3C1P.…”
