The epidemiology of wheeze in children, when assessed by questionnaires, is dependent on parents' understanding of the term ''wheeze''.In a questionnaire survey of a random population sample of 4,236 children aged 6-10 yrs, parents' definition of wheeze was assessed. Predictors of a correct definition were determined and the potential impact of incorrect answers on prevalence estimates from the survey was assessed.Current wheeze was reported by 13.2% of children. Overall, 83.5% of parents correctly identified ''whistling or squeaking'' as the definition of wheeze; the proportion was higher for parents reporting wheezy children (90.4%). Frequent attacks of reported wheeze (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 3.0), maternal history of asthma (OR 1.5) and maternal education (OR 1.5) were significantly associated with a correct answer, while the converse was found for South Asian ethnicity (OR 0.6), first language not English (OR 0.6) and living in a deprived neighbourhood (OR 0.6).In summary, the present study showed that misunderstanding could lead to an important bias in assessing the prevalence of wheeze, resulting in an underestimation in children from South Asian and deprived family backgrounds. Prevalence estimates for the most severe categories of wheeze might be less affected by this bias and questionnaire surveys on wheeze should incorporate measures of parents' understanding of the term wheeze.

ÖZAmaç: Vizing İngilizce kökenli bir kelimedir ve İngilizcenin anadil olmadığı ülkelerde aileler yakınmalarını farklı terminolojiler kullanarak anlatırlar. Bu anlatım farklılığı tanıda zorluklar yaşanmasına yol açabilmektedir. Çalışmada, halkın vizing sesini nasıl tarif ettiği saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: ISAAC (International Study of Asthma andAllergies in Childhood) çalışma grubu tarafından video anket yöntemi için hazırlanan görüntü akıllı telefonlar yardımıyla gönüllü kişilere izletildi. İlk aşamada gönüllülerden izledikleri görüntüdeki sesi tarif etmeleri istendi, ikinci aşamada ise daha önceden belirlenmiş olan seçenekler verilerek bu sese en yakın tanımın hangisi olduğu soruldu. Kişilerin tanımlayıcı bilgileri ve sosyoekonomik durumları kaydedildi.Bulgular: Çalışmaya ortalama yaşı 36.1±9.4 yıl olan 322 gönüllü katıldı. Katılımcıların %52.2'si erkek idi ve %66.1'i videoda dinletilen sesi daha önce duymuştu. 322 katılımcının vizing sesi için 55 farklı tarif kullandığı saptandı. En çok kullanılan tarifler nefes darlığı sesi (%23.2), hırıltı (%15.8), boğulma sesi (%11.1) ve astımlı hasta kriz sesi (%9.3) idi. Hışıltı tüm cevapların %1.2'sini oluşturmaktaydı. Katılımcıların cinsiyetine ve ailelerinde allerjik hastalık öyküsü olup olmamasına göre vizing sesine verdikleri cevaplar arasında anlamlı farklılık saptandı (sırası ile p=0.005 ve p<0.001). Çalışmanın son kısmında katılımcılara daha önce hazırlanmış olan anketten seçenekler verilerek (hırıltı, hışıltı, kedi miyavlaması, fokurtu, haşırtı) dinledikleri sese en yakın ifadenin hangisi olduğu sorulduğunda en çok verilen 3 cevabın hırıltı, hışıltı ve kedi miyavlaması olduğu görüldü. ABSTRACTObjective: Wheezing is a word derived from English. However, the parents use different terminologies for the respiratory complaints of their children especially in countries where English is not a mother tongue. This expression variety can lead to difficulties in diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to determine how people describe the sound of wheezing. Materials and Methods:The video, prepared for the video questionnaire method by the ISAAC study group (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood), was watched by volunteers with the help of smartphones. In the first stage, they were asked to describe the voice in the video they watched. In the second stage they were given options and asked which is the closest description for the sound they heard. The descriptive information and socioeconomic status of the volunteers were recorded.Results: 322 volunteers with a mean age of 36.1 ± 9.4 years participated in this study. 52.2% of the participants were male. 66.1% of the participants had heard the voice played on the video before. It was determined that 322 participants used 55 different definitions for the wheezing sound. The most frequently used definitions were shortness of breath (23.2%), grunting (15.8%), choking sound (11.1%) and asthma patient crisis noise (9.3%). The wheezing accounted for 1.2% of all answers.
