Understanding and assessment of mining equipment effectiveness

Abstract: Productivity and efficiency of mining equipment are among the most important factors contributing to unit mining cost, and measuring and benchmarking them is one of the best ways of identifying the possibilities of improvement. It is in this context that the present paper discusses the notion of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The paper reviews main components of OEEavailability, utilisation and production efficiency. It discusses some of the factors influencing those components as well as different mea… Show more

“…Production efficiency is: Figure 2 shows the graphical demonstration of the aforementioned relationships among the three OEE elements. On the other hand, Paraszczak [44] published an article related to the evaluation of effectiveness in mining equipment. Based on the general definition of OEE given by Nakajima [43] and based on Campbell and Jardine [45], the work structured the new definition of the OEE on the differences that exist between mining equipment and manufacturing industry equipment.…”

“…Some papers have been reported in the literature addressing the adaptations and utilizations of the OEE in mining operations [24][25][26][27][28][29]. Emery [26] described the application of the Total Productive Management (TPM) technique and the use of OEE in coal mining operations.…”

“…One of the most important modifications is the one that addresses the quality rate factor. According to Paraszczak [25], Sustainability 2018, 10, 362 4 of 15 a more pertinent factor for mining equipment is the production efficiency. As in mining production systems, the production process is a quasi-uniform flow of bulk product, and the performance is the degree of operating relative to the nominal production rate or speed.…”

“…In this case, the analysis was also carried out using the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) model. Studies [22][23][24][25] have also made reference to the effectiveness of mining machines operating in both hard coal and bauxite mines. The above-mentioned publications essentially referred only to the analysis of the effectiveness for single mining machines, while the presented results indicated a low degree of utilisation of the mining machines being analysed.…”
