Undernutrition During Suckling Changes the Sensitivity to Haloperidol and Chlorpromazine in Two Behavioural Measures in Weaning Rats

Abstract: Undernutrition during critical periods of development may cause changes in the behavioural responses of rats to centrally acting drugs. In the present study, the effects of undernutrition during suckling on the behavioural responses of 21-days-old rats to chlorpromazine (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) or haloperidol (0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, I or 2 mg/kg) were examined. Locomotion was assessed at 1 hr 30 rnin., 4 hr 30 min., 7 hr 30 min. and 10 hr 30 rnin., and catalepsy was scored at 3 hr, 6 hr and 9 hr after drug a… Show more

“…Perinatal undernutrition may change different anatomical, neurochemical, physiological, pharmacological, developmental and behavioral parameters (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). The methods used to produce undernutrition in rats are accompanied by changes in mother-pup interaction (8)(9)(10)(11)(12) and it has been proposed that changes in maternal behavior tend to minimize the effects of undernutrition on offspring growth and development (13,14).…”

“…Mice were gently removed from their home cage by their tail and their forepaws were placed over a glass horizontal bar, 0.5 cm in diameter and 30 cm long, which was fixed at a height of 4 cm above the working surface. As proposed by several authors (Barnes et al 1990;Dijk et al 1991;Rocha et al 1997), to perform one catalepsy determination at one time point, the animal was given three trials. The sum (or the average) of these trials make possible to decrease the stress-induced data variability produced by the handling procedure as compared to a single trial per determination.…”
