Unassisted solar water splitting with 9.8% efficiency and over 100 h stability based on Si solar cells and photoelectrodes catalyzed by bifunctional Ni–Mo/Ni

Abstract: Designing a highly efficient and stable photoelectrochemical (PEC) tandem cell for unassisted solar water splitting is considered a promising approach for large-scale solar energy storage.

“…ABPE of photoanode was calculated from the corresponding LSV curves using the equation:54 ABPE %=[]JphmA cm2×1.23VappV×ηPlightmW cm2 × 100 where J ph is the photocurrent density, and V app is the applied bias derived from the corresponding LSV curves, η is faradaic efficiency and supposed to be 1, and P light is the incident power density, respectively.…”

“…The increase in current density after 500 cycles might be attributed to the oxidation of the Bi surface to BiO x or Bi(OH) x . Oxidation of the photocatalyst is common, and the surface oxides might act the active center for OER . Figure S5 in the Supporting Information shows the field‐emission (FE‐)SEM images of BOC/BVO/g‐CN‐15, which were taken after the stability test in dark and light conditions.…”

“…where J ph is the photocurrent density at a zero-bias potential and P light is referred to the power density of incident light. For PEC water splitting system with an applied potential, the applied bias photoconversion efficiency (ABPE) in threeelectrode system can reflect the PEC performance of single photoanode and photocathode, which is determined from the following equation: [31] ( ) ( )…”
