RESUMOO estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, tem revelado um importante potencial paleontológico dos depósitos quaternários, em especial devido à riqueza de fósseis encontrados nas grutas e rios da região da Serra da Bodoquena. Este trabalho apresenta novos dados taxonômicos de espécimes coletados do rio Miranda (Miranda, MS), uma nova localidade fossilífera da megafauna pleistocênica da região. Dentre os materiais identificados, estão restos fósseis de Megatheriidae, Mylodontidae, Glyptodontinae, Pampatheriidae e Toxodontidae. Ressalta-se a ocorrência, até agora inédita, do pampaterídeo Holmesina, que preenche uma lacuna paleobiogeográfica na América do Sul.Palavras-chave: Megafauna; Serra da Bodoquena; Pleistoceno; Mato Grosso do Sul.ABSTRACT NEW OCCURRENCE OF PLEISTOCENE MEGAFAUNA IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL. The state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, has revealed an important paleontological potential of Quaternary deposits, especially because of the fossil richness in caves and rivers of the Serra da Bodoquena region. This study presents new taxonomic data of specimens collected from a new fossiliferous locality of the Pleistocene megafauna in this region, the Miranda River (Miranda, MS). Among the material that has been identified are fossil remains of Megatheriidae, Mylodontidae, Glyptodontinae, Pampatheriidae and Toxodontidae. It is important to mention the novel occurrence of the Pampatheriidae Holmesina, which fills a paleobiogeographic gap in South America.

The intrageneric relationships of the pampatheriid genus Scirrotherium and its affinities with supposedly related genera, i.e., Kraglievichia and Holmesina, are revised through parsimony phylogenetic analyses and new comparative morphological descriptions. For this work, unpublished material of pampatheriids (numerous osteoderms, one partial skull and a few postcranial bones) from Neogene formations of Colombia was analyzed. The results show that Scirrotherium is paraphyletic if we include all its referred species, i.e., Scirrotherium hondaensis, S. carinatum and S. antelucanus. The species S. carinatum is closer to Kraglievichia paranensis than to S. hondaensis or S. antelucanus, therefore the new name K. carinatum comb. nov. is proposed. The relationship among S. hondaensis and S. antelucanus could not be resolved, so these species should be designated in aphyly. In spite of failing to recover S. hondaensis and S. antelucanus as one single clade, here is preferred to maintain the generic name Scirrotherium in both species based on diagnostic evidence. New emended diagnoses for Scirrotherium, S. hondaensis and Kraglievichia are provided. The genus Holmesina was found to be monophyletic and positioned as the sister clade of Scirrotherium + Kraglievichia. The evolutionary and biogeographic implications of the new phylogeny and taxonomic re-arrangements are discussed. A possible geographic origin of the family Pampatheriidae and Scirrotherium in low latitudes of South America as early as Early Miocene times is claimed. The South American ancestor or sister taxon of Holmesina is predicted to be morphologically more similar to Scirrotherium than to Kraglievichia.

The study of two caves from the Serra do Ramalho region is here presented, this is one of the most important karstic areas in Brazil. A taxonomic analysis revealed 29 taxa including Xenarthra, Cetartiodactyla and Carnivora, ranging from Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene. Taphonomic studies reveal taphocoenosis consisting mainly of complete elements, without significant transportation, but also of transported elements, composing spatial-mixed, predominantly in situ-preserved assemblages. The predominance of Xenarthrans found within the caves is probably biased by a taphonomic pattern since these animals would have life habits related to cave environments, therefore with higher chances of preservation. There is evidence of accidental death of the scelidotheriines in Lapa dos Peixes cave, where entrapment of the animals during one or more events of river flooding is pointed as a hypothesis. Deposition took place within different periods of dry and humid climate incorporating bones in clastic and chemical deposits. Cycles of sedimentary deposition and reworking (erosion) may have acted in generating complex and overlapping depositional patterns with time averaging. During depositional phase, while the cave environment was occupied rather by Xenarthrans, parts of other animals were transported in the scope of fluvial systems and gravity loads, as well as by accidental falling or scavengers. The sedimentary deposits are currently being eroded by rain runoff in both caves, causing the reallocation of finer sediments to deeper conduits but the fossils keep close to their original location. This process is exposing a large amount of fossils, allowing extensive sampling which would be impossible with active excavations, since it would require an excessively longer time and damages to the caves.
