In this paper we give an account of species in the genus Diaporthe. Since morphological characters are inadequate to define species in this genus, DNA sequence data are essential to differentiate them. We therefore focus this paper on the 171 species for which ex-type/exepitype/ex-isotype/ex-neotype isolates and corresponding molecular data are available and these species are listed alphabetically. Sexual or asexual morph are noted under each species, detailed descriptions of type materials, host records and geographic distribution are provided. Available DNA sequence data from ex-type cultures are listed in Table 1. Phylogenetic relationships of the species are given in a multi-locus phylogenetic tree based on combined ITS, tef1-α, β-tubulin and CAL sequences.

Phytotoxins are secondary microbial metabolites that play an essential role in the development of disease symptoms induced by fungi on host plants. Although phytotoxins can cause extensive-and in some cases devastating-damage to agricultural crops, they can also represent an important tool to develop natural herbicides when produced by fungi and plants to inhibit the growth and spread of weeds. An alternative strategy to biologically control parasitic plants is based on the use of plant and fungal metabolites, which stimulate seed germination in the absence of the host plant. Nontoxigenic fungi also produce bioactive metabolites with potential fungicide and insecticide activity, and could be applied for crop protection. All these metabolites represent important tools to develop eco-friendly pesticides. This review deals with the relationships between the biological activity of some phytotoxins, seed germination stimulants, fungicides and insecticides, and their stereochemistry.

Recently, a new fungal disease caused by Diaporthe angelicae (anamorph Phomopsis foeniculi) has been found with increasingly frequency on fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) in Bulgaria. Using a bioassay-guided isolation and purification procedure, different metabolites were isolated from the fungal culture filtrates. They were identified by spectroscopic methods as nectriapyrone, a pentaketide monoterpenoid, and altersolanols A and J and macrosporin, three octaketides anthracenones. Leaf puncture bioassay was applied on detached tomato leaves to prove the phytotoxic activity of the fractions and of pure compounds. Nectriapyrone and altersolanols A and J showed a modulated phytotoxicity, while macrosporin was not toxic. Altersolanol A was the most active compound
