The Botryosphaeriaceae comprises endophytes, saprobes and plant pathogens. Recently, some taxa in Botryosphaeriaceae have undergone nomenclatural changes. This paper represents the first comprehensive overview of Botryosphaeriaceae since 2013. Twenty three genera and 187 species of Botryosphaeriaceae are listed alphabetically, brief notes for species in each genus are provided. Information is provided for the location of ex-type isolates, new host records and geographical distribution of species. Available DNA sequences from ex-type isolates are listed in a table and multilocus phylogenetic trees for major genera in Botryosphaeriaceae are provided.

In this paper we give an account of species in the genus Diaporthe. Since morphological characters are inadequate to define species in this genus, DNA sequence data are essential to differentiate them. We therefore focus this paper on the 171 species for which ex-type/exepitype/ex-isotype/ex-neotype isolates and corresponding molecular data are available and these species are listed alphabetically. Sexual or asexual morph are noted under each species, detailed descriptions of type materials, host records and geographic distribution are provided. Available DNA sequence data from ex-type cultures are listed in Table 1. Phylogenetic relationships of the species are given in a multi-locus phylogenetic tree based on combined ITS, tef1-α, β-tubulin and CAL sequences.

Diaporthe species were revealed by DNA sequence analyses based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF), partial regions of the β-tubulin (BT) and calmodulin (CAL). Among 44 isolates, D. eres was the dominant species, accounting for 27% of the frequency of occurrence. Our study revealed a high diversity of undescribed Diaporthe species from various hosts in Italy.

Diaporthe juglandicola sp. nov, collected from diseased branches of Juglans mandshurica in Beijing, China, is described and illustrated in this paper. Evidence for this new species is provided by its holomorphic morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Morphologically, the asexual morph produces hyaline, aseptate, ellipsoidal, alpha conidia (8.1-8.7 × 2.3-2.9 μm), while the sexual morph produces 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate to cylindric asci and fusoid, 0-1-septate ascospores. The phylogeny inferred from combined multi-locus sequences (CAL, HIS, ITS, TEF1-α, TUB) grouped the isolates of the new species into a distinct lineage.

A total of 52 isolates were characterized by multi-locus sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and partial sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF). According to morphological characteristics and analysis of multi-gene sequence data, 14 species in Botryosphaeriaceae belonging to five genera, viz. Botryosphaeria, Diplodia, Dothiorella, Eutiarosporella and Neofusicoccum were identified, including Dothiorella italica sp. nov. The other known species isolated were Botryosphaeria dothidea, B. auasmontanum, Diplodia alatafructa, Di. crataegicola, Di. mutila, Di. sapinea, Di. seriata, Dothiorella omnivora, Do. rhamni, Do. sarmentorum, Do. sempervirentis, Eutiarosporella dactylidis and Neofusicoccum parvum. Of these, Botryosphaeria dothidea and Diplodia seriata were the most prevalent species among the isolates. Several new host-fungus relationships were established. This study indicates the fungal family Botryosphaeriaceae seems to be common and widespread on a broad range of hosts in Italy.

Dothiorella species are pathogens of many woody hosts but their host distribution is poorly known. In this study, a collection of Dothiorella isolates obtained from different woody hosts, including Acer, Cornus, Coronilla, Crataegus, Euonymus, Fraxinus, Laburnum, Laurus, Paliurus, Prunus, Salix, Sambucus and Ulmus species in Italy were identified. Morphological and cultural characteristics, as well as ITS and EF1-α sequence data, were used to identify the isolates. The results show the diversity of Dothiorella species associated with twigs and branches of these woody hosts. Four species were identified. Dothiorella sarmentorum was the dominant species (65% of isolates), followed by D. symphoricarposicola (20%), D. iberica (8%) and D. vidmadera (8%). A host-fungus index for all Dothiorella species with available molecular data from the literature is provided.
