This article discusses the recent expansion and democratization of Brazil's higher education system from the beginning of the twentyfirst century to the present, concluding with its contemporary clash with the far-right government, which has placed universities and scientific knowledge under attackan experience had around the globe. In the last two decades, Brazilian public universities have become more diverse in terms of the class and racial backgrounds of students, as well as their larger expansion with new campuses in the hinterlands, the Amazon, and the peripheries of metropolitan areas. Private higher education has also expanded enormouslyin part, thanks to capital concentration, inflow of foreign capital, massive public subsidies and oligopolistic strategies. In both public and private sectors, Brazilian higher education has experienced a renascence. However, since 2018, the new power bloc, concentrated around President Bolsonaro and the far right, chose Public Universities and the National Science and Research system as one of its main targets. The current regressive moment in Brazil it is not an exception, in different countries universities and science are under attack. Ultimately, this article seeks to contribute, not only to a better understanding of Brazil's on-going experience, but also to the larger public debate on higher education policy in the Global South and other countries facing similar challenges.

A greve nacional dos docentes das Instituições Federais de Ensino, organizada pelo Andes-SN em 2012, teve como reivindicações centrais a organização da carreira docente, o reajuste salarial e a melhoria das condições de trabalho. Este artigo pretende dar centralidade à luta pela defesa da carreira – por meio de breve reconstrução histórica da luta travada naquela greve – como uma garantia do funcionamento público das universidades estatais. Primeiramente, retomamos alguns de seus antecedentes principais; em seguida, apresentamos as consequências das conquistas e das derrotas da greve, indicando as contradições inerentes da continuidade do processo de privatização a partir de novas alterações na carreira no mesmo sentido daquele imposto pelo governo federal do Partido dos Trabalhadores em 2012, com o apoio do seu braço “sindical”, o PROIFES-Federação.

Na esteira dos 10 anos daquela que foi a maior greve docente das Instituições Federais de Ensino (IFE) brasileiras, o presente artigo, de caráter ensaístico, se propõe a problematizá-la, no que tange aos seus desdobramentos na organização das/dos docentes, à luz do REUNI na Universidade Federal de Goiás, com particular interesse em seus campi do interior, sobretudo, o campus Goiás. Para tanto, utilizamos de pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e da experiência empírica de greve, vivida pelos próprios autores/as. Tal estudo permitiu a constatação dos efeitos deletérios do REUNI, principalmente nos campi do interior, e a greve como fator catalisador e impulsionador do movimento docente, mormente da oposição sindical na UFG. Dessa feita, entende-se que tal programa (REUNI) só pode ser entendido e analisado em sua dinâmica contraditória de expansão precarizada e que a greve continua como importante instrumento de lutas da classe trabalhadora, inclusas as frações não ligadas diretamente à esfera da produção.
