Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Abstract: A brief overview of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and related techniques is given. This technique measures the occupied electronic states in solids and at surfaces. In its angle‐resolved version, it provides the complete information about electrons in solids. After discussing the underlying physics, a variety of applications in materials science are illustrated. Practical questions are addressed as well.

“…The conduction band energy ( E C ) can be calculated by adding the E g of PDACuBr 4 to E V , resulting in the value of −4.08 eV. For n‐type semiconductor, the carriers are dominated by the conduction electrons when E F is located near E C 58,59 . Apparently, the Fermi level of E F is located much closer to the conduction band (Figure 3(D)), implying that PDACuBr 4 is an n‐type semiconductor.…”

“…Photoelectron spectroscopy allows for the study of surface elements, providing information about their chemical and electronic states. In particular, XPS, studies the emission of photoelectrons using soft-rays (200-2000) eV, while UPS [44] uses UV radiation (10-45) eV. In general, XPS can identify the characteristic binding energy, i.e.…”
