Ultraviolet exposure and risk of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma in Ulm and Dresden, Germany

Abstract: The odds for having clinical actinic elastosis was lower in BCC compared to melanoma. In contrast, various factors associated with chronic UV exposure and age had higher odds for sporadic BCC, rather than melanoma. Further research is required to set the context for these findings, especially regarding, atopy in non-lentiginous vs. lentiginous forms of melanoma, and possible molecular pathways involved.

“…The increased attributable risk to skin cancer does not only concern melanoma but also squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): A recent study has found a relative risk of 1.9, which means a 90% increased risk for SCC in sunbed users. Moreover, sunbed use was also shown to be a risk factor (among others) for sporadic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in Germany …”

“…Moreover, sunbed use was also shown to be a risk factor (among others) for sporadic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in Germany. 10 Accordingly, awareness campaigns have been launched to inform the public about the risk of sunbed use, and in some countries there has been a ban for children and young adults to visit commercial sunbeds, 11 including Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Iceland, Norway, Ireland and Lithuania. A total ban for sunbeds have been imposed in Australia since 2015, as in Brazil where such a ban was executed in 2009 already.…”

“…The relationship between atopy and carcinoma of the skin has been examined by several studies, with divergent results. [1][2][3][4][5][6] In the scientific literature, two underlying major concepts are discussed. The first cites allergies as a stimulant of the immune system and protective factor with respect to the development of carcinoma.…”

“…[19][20][21][22][23] Fair skin, red or blond hair, and light eye color are associated with BCC as independent risk factors due to greater susceptibility to UV damage. 21,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29] BCC risk is increased by both UV-A and -B radiation as well as by ionizing radiation. Radiation treatment for other conditions, especially at a young age, is also associated with an increased risk for developing BCC.…”
