Ultrastructure of the Miracidium of Echinostoma paraensei Lie and Basch, 1967 (Trematoda, Echinostomatidae)

Abstract: The morphology of Echinostoma paraensei was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The terebratorium region has many electrondense secretory granules and many folds on the surface. The epidermal cells that cover the larval body have unique nuclear morphology, many mitochondria and vesicles being attached to the interepidermal ridges by a septate junction. The cilia present the organization 9 + 2 and a typical structure with a shaft, axosome, basal body and rootlet. Below the epidermal cells there is a… Show more

“…By using an approach that has been previously applied to S. mansoni adult worms and cercariae, we examined the distribution of filamentous actin in eggs, miracidia and primary sporocysts. Flame cells are thought to be protonephridial elements involved in the excretion process by S. mansoni forms and can also be found in other Trematoda (Pan, 1980 ;Pinheiro et al 2005 ;Rohde and Watson, 1992 ;Rollinson et al 1987). Already in that form, by careful examination of sequential optical sections, it was possible to observe previously undescribed actinrich tubules.…”

“…The dried material was mounted on metallic stubs, covered with double-face carbon tape and golden coated (Balzers). The samples were observed under a Jeol JSM 5310 scanning electron microscope, using 20 kV, and the images were digitalized through the SEMAfore software (Pinheiro et al, 2005).…”

“…Also, this is the fi rst report of the ultrastructure of the eggshell, which is thicker in the anterior and posterior ends and thinner in the middle/lateral region. Also, there are no specializations such as the knob described at the posterior end of the eggshell in Echinostoma paraensei (Pinheiro et al, 2004a;b). This characteristic has not been shown before.…”
