Electron microscopy as a supplement in the diagnosis of glomus jugulare tumor

“…Our tumor was of the predominantly cellular type. The electron microscopic picture of this tumor does not, except with regard to the few blood vessels, differ from the findings of other authors (Balogh et al, 1966;Boyd et al, (1959); Gansler, 1958;Gejrot et al, 1964;Gonzalez-Angulo et al, (1968); Kawabata et al, 1969;Julian et al, 1971;Seifert, 1965;Smith and Gladney, 1968), and the picture is without any doubt that of a glomus tumor. The lack of the usual abundance of vessels in the tumor could explain why the pathologist did not make the correct diagnosis on any of the biopsies taken.…”

His report has been followed by several others (Boyd et al, 1959;Gejroth et al, 1964;Seifert, 1965;Balogh et al, 1966;Gonzalez-Angulo et al, 1968;Smith and Gladney, 1968;Kawabata et al, 1969;Julian et al, 1971), and to our knowledge a total of eighteen glomus jugulare tumors have, up to now, been subjected to electron microscopic investigations.…”
