Ultrastructural Study of Hemangiomas

Abstract: The fine structure of capillary hemangiomas from the skin of six young adults was investigated. All the vessels had non‐fenestrated endothelial cells. Their intercellular junctions had tight junctions, but desmosome‐We structures were also present. Cytoplasmic filaments (50–100Å in width) as well as microtubular bodies were present in some of the endothelial cells. The bodies were approximately 0.1 μm in diameter and up to 0.5 μm in length. Sub‐endothelial basement membrane was present and sometimes multilamin… Show more

“…Caveolin-1 remains overexpressed in the endothelial cells of the capillary tufts at the edge of the hemangioma but is reduced in the sclerosed hyaluronic lesion (Figure 6a and b). Hemangioma has been reported to be composed of numerous caves forming a labyrinth with narrow interconnecting canals and lined by spindle-shaped endothelial cells with multilayered smooth muscle cells [21,22]. We demonstrated endothelial cells together with multilayered smooth muscle cells by electron microscopy and the difference between high expression of caveolin-1 in the endothelial cells and scanty expression of fibroblasts by immunohistochemistry.…”

“…The pathology of the adult form has some hamartomatous features [8]. It may be associated with hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and an increase in size may occur during pregnancy or following estrogen administration [9,10].…”

“…Furthermore, in 1 report, 9 patients had lesions which were considered to be either technically unresectable or resectable only with unjustifiable risk. These were treated conservatively and none came to any harm [8]. Although steroids have been used to treat the infantile type of lesion mentioned above, there is no controlled evidence that these are of any value and there is no evidence at ail that they have any effect in adults.…”
