Ultrasonic measurements of Musculus longissmus dorsi thoracis et lumborum (MLD)were taken of Dorper (n=99) and Dorper x Merino (n=65) lambs at 156 days of age and comparisons made to various body dimensions to ascertain whether sex, genotype, birth type and live weight had any effect on these parameters. Lambs were weaned two months after birth and placed ad libitum on basic dry land pasture during the draught spring and summer months of 2014 in the arid southeastern region of Turkey. Least square means of backfat thickness, skin+backfat thickness, muscle depth, body length, chest girth and live weight, at the mean age of 156 days, were 0.17 cm, 0.32 cm, 1.75 cm, 63.30 cm, 72.37 cm and 25.16 kg, respectively. Genotype was a statistically significant factor in terms of back fat thickness (BFT), skin and backfat thickness (S+BFT), muscle depth (MD), body length (BL) and live weight (LW). The study showed that Dorper and Dorper x Merino genotypes into Turkey show a clear advantage over the native breeds in terms of meat production and quality not to mention the high potential for lean carcass production. Ultrasonic measurements of Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (MLD) will provide an important contribution to selection index in breeding programs for Dorper and Dorper crossbred genotypes. However estimation of genetic parameters are required in containing a pedigree database in order to establish an effective selection index.

Ultrasound scanning traits have been adapted in selection programs in many countries to improve carcass traits for lean meat production. As the genetic parameters of the traits interested are important for breeding programs, the estimation of these parameters was aimed at the present investigation. The estimated parameters were direct and maternal heritability as well as genetic correlations between the studied traits. The traits were backfat thickness (BFT), skin + backfat thickness (SBFT), eye muscle depth (MD) and live weights at the day of scanning (LW). The breed investigated was Kivircik, which has a high quality of meat. Six different multi-trait animal models were fitted to determine the most suitable model for the data using Bayesian approach. Based on deviance information criterion, a model that includes direct additive genetic effects, maternal additive genetic effects, direct maternal genetic covariance and maternal permanent environmental effects revealed to be the most appropriate for the data, and therefore, inferences were built on the results of that model. The direct heritability estimates for BFT, SBFT, MD and LW were 0.26, 0.26, 0.23 and 0.09, whereas the maternal heritability estimates were 0.27, 0.27, 0.24 and 0.20, respectively. Negative genetic correlations were obtained between direct and maternal effects for BFT, SBFT and MD. Both direct and maternal genetic correlations between traits were favorable, whereas BFT-MD and SBFT-MD had negligible direct genetic correlation. The highest direct and maternal genetic correlations were between BFT and SBFT (0.39) and between MD and LW (0.48), respectively. Our results, in general, indicated that maternal effects should be accounted for in estimation of genetic parameters of ultrasound scanning traits in Kivircik lambs, and SBFT can be used as a selection criterion to improve BFT.

Weaning weight is considered one of pre-weaning traits which influence the post-weaning growth performance. In addition, ultrasound technique is commonly used in the livestock sector, such as a diagnostic tool and a tool in animal science and veterinary research. So, the present study was performed to study the effect of different weaning weights on growth performance, ultrasound measurements, carcass characteristics and meat quality of Barki ramlambs. Moreover, this investigation aimed to examine the relationship among ultrasound measurements, body measurements, carcass characteristics and meat quality of Barki lambs. Twenty-three Barki lambs were divided into three groups according to their weaning weights: seven lambs in a low weaning weight group (G1), nine lambs in a medium weaning weight group (G2), seven lambs in a high weaning weight group (G3) (17.5±1.1, 22.7±1.0 and 28.4±1.1 kg, respectively), and raised for around seven months in an individual housing system. Subcutaneous fat thickness, muscle depth, muscle width, and muscle area at the 12 th thoracic vertebrae were measured two times using the ultrasound scan. Body weight and measurements were recorded. All Barki lambs were slaughtered (one year of age approximately), and their carcass traits, and meat quality were evaluated. All growth performance traits showed significant (p<0.01) differences among the three groups, except birth weight and age. Dressing % (based on slaughter body weight) was higher (p <0.05) in G3 than G1 and G2 groups. The lowest (p <0.05) percentage of offal's was observed in G3 compared to G1 and G2 groups. Meat protein % was higher (p <0.05) in G3 than G1 group. Meat of the G3 group was less (p <0.05) tender than other two groups. The ultrasound Longissimus dorsi muscle area (ULDMA) and ultrasound fat thickness have a positive significant (p <0.05) correlation with carcass back fat and carcass Longissimus dorsi muscle area. The hot carcass weight could be predicted using the ULDMA and slaughter body weight, where the model R 2 reached 95%. Our results confirmed that the weaning weight has an influence on the post-weaning growth traits, carcass merits and some meat quality parameters. Also the obtained results clearly indicated that the ultrasound technique could be used for the accurate prediction of carcass characteristics in Barki lambs.
