Ultrasound‐Guided Proximal Suprascapular Nerve Block With Radiofrequency Lesioning for Patients With Malignancy‐Associated Recalcitrant Shoulder Pain

Abstract: The classic suprascapular nerve block has limitations, such as postural requirements and lack of direct nerve visualization. This series investigated the analgesic effect of ultrasound-guided supraclavicular suprascapular nerve blocks in patients with malignancy-associated shoulder pain. Ablative radiofrequency lesioning of the suprascapular nerve in 6 patients provided substantial pain relief. The mean distance from the suprascapular nerve to the brachial plexus was 8.05 mm, and the mean angle of needle entry… Show more

“…In all, 36 of these publications were on pRF procedures and 29 of these publications reported procedures exclusively done on the suprascapular nerve. The other six publications, all case series or reports, were on aRF (Bone et al, 2013;Brown et al, 1988;Chang et al, 2015;Eckmann et al, 2019;Nakamura et al, 2013;Simopoulos et al, 2012). We also extracted data from nine conference abstracts (Cannon et al, 2012;Dua et al, 2016;Fernandes et al, 2011;Londono et al, 2014;Nakamura et al, 2013;Osako et al, 2016;Pieran, 2010;Vander Cruyssen et al, 2018;Yoshimura et al, 2018) that met the eligibility criteria for this review.…”

“…Repositioning the transducer more laterally allows visualization of the suprascapular nerve leaving the upper trunk. 36 The needle can be introduced by an in-plane approach from lateral to medial until the perineurium is reached ( Figure 5D , Video S5 ).…”

“…[ 9 11 ] In fact, ultrasound (US)-guided intervention for the proximal suprascapular nerve has been shown effective in recalcitrant shoulder pain. [ 12 ] Taken together, these observations suggest that clarification of the relationship between shoulder and cervical spine pathologies could be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of relevant painful syndromes. The present study aimed to explore the association between rotator cuff tendon tears and cervical radiculopathies at the C5 and C6 root levels.…”
