Ultrasound-guided percutaneous fine-needle aspiration of solid pancreatic neoplasms: 10-year experience with more than 2,000 cases and a review of the literature

Abstract: • Percutaneous ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of pancreatic neoplasms is sensitive and accurate. • The short-term complication rate of percutaneous ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is low. • Technical aspects may influence the rate of diagnostic samples.

“…In previous studies the diagnostic accuracy of image‐guided pancreas biopsy was 81.6–91.9% with US and 78–84% with CT . In this study, the diagnostic accuracy of MRI‐guided pancreas biopsy was 93.5%, sensitivity 92.6%, specificity 100%, the PPV was 100%, and the NPV was 67%, higher than that in previous literature reports.…”

“… Percutaneous FNA carried out under US guidance is a sensitive, accurate, and safe procedure in the diagnosis and management of solid pancreatic neoplasms. Diagnostic accuracy reported in the literature (98.7%) is based on a high number of cases [ 28 ]. The presence of a cytologist and the use of suction needles permit acquisition of samples of high diagnostic quality, thus reducing the need to repeat FNA [ 28 ].…”

“…Pancreatic biopsies can be readily performed using US or CT guidance. 50,51 Omental and Mesenteric Biopsy Image-guided percutaneous biopsy of the mesentery and omentum plays an increasingly important role is establishing primary or metastatic disease to these structures. Omental and mesenteric masses are common imaging findings, and biopsy is often necessary to differentiate neoplastic from infection or granulomatous processes.…”
