Ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment for uterine fibroid & adenomyosis: A single center experience from the Republic of Korea

Abstract: We conclude that USgHIFU treatment for uterine fibroid and adenomyosis is an effective non-invasive therapy via the assessment of fibroid volume reduction, symptom improvement, UFS-QOL score increase, and acceptable level of side effects. Although preliminary experience of HIFU is encouraging, well-designed prospective trials and more clinical experiences are needed to ascertain the efficacy and safety of this new treatment.

“…[36][37][38][39][40] More recently, the focus has moved to examine the level of reduction of symptoms in treated patients. 33,35,41 Treatment adjuncts have also been explored in an attempt to further enhance clinical effectiveness and improve efficiency. 42 As the therapeutic technique is the same for both MR-guided and US-guided HIFU, studies using both guidance methods have been included in this review.…”

“…16 Some non-English-speaking countries have used this questionnaire for studies on women with UF without validating it, such as a study conducted in Korea. 17 This study presented some limitations: we did not calculate the criterion validity, which would consist of assessment of the UFS-QOL questionnaire using a clinical tool that is considered to be the gold standard. In this case, we would have had to compare it with the alkaline hematin technique for quantifying blood loss, or with a pictorial blood assessment chart (PBAC).…”
