Translation and validation of the Uterine Fibroid Symptom and Quality of Life (UFS-QOL) questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese language

Abstract: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Uterine fibroids (UF), also known as leiomyomas, are the most prevalent gynecological tumors. The Uterine Fibroid Symptoms and Quality of Life (UFS-QOL) is the only specific questionnaire that assesses symptom intensity and quality-of-life issues for women with symptomatic UF; however, it only exists in the English language. Thus, we aimed to translate and culturally validate the UFS-QOL questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese language. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study, Depar… Show more

“…UFE has been reported as a less morbid alternative in women who wish to preserve their uterus when hysterectomy and myomectomy are contraindicated, when fibroids are refractory to myomectomy, or when there is a high risk of conversion to hysterectomy (Spies et al 2002;Pisco et al 2017;Mohan et al 2013;Fornazari et al 2019). In this setting, UFS-QOL is a validated tool for measuring patient-reported symptoms and documenting clinical outcomes from surgical and interventional procedures (Spies et al 2002;Williams et al 2006;Harding et al 2008), with good internal consistency, discriminant validity, construct validity, structural validity, test-retest similarity, and responsiveness, including in its Portuguese version (Oliveira Brito et al 2017;Silva et al 2016).…”

“…It has since been translated to Portuguese and this translation validated, with good internal consistency, discriminant validity, construct validity, structural validity and responsiveness, along with adequate test-retest results. It is accepted by the Society for Interventional Radiology (Beaton et al 2000), as described in the publications of Oliveira et al (Oliveira Brito et al 2017) and Silva et al (Silva et al 2016).…”

“…The uterine fibroid symptom and quality of life (UFS-QoL) English questionnaire was published in 2002 as the only questionnaire designed to assess the whole spectrum of fibroid-related symptoms and their impact on QoL [ 15 ]. The UFS-QoL questionnaire has been used in Brazilian, Portuguese [ 16 , 17 ], Spanish [ 18 ], traditional Chinese [ 19 ], and simplified Chinese [ 20 ] as a disease-specific measure of health-related QoL. It has been shown to be sensitive to treatment-related changes [ 18 ], with the 4-week recall version being sensitive to treatment-related changes in Western culture [ 21 ].…”

“…[6][7][8] It has been translated in Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese and Spanish. [9][10][11] International guidelines for validating questionnaires have been developed by the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) initiative. 12 These guidelines provide recommendations regarding a systematic translation of a questionnaire and measuring its validity, reliability, responsiveness and interpretability.…”
