Ultrasound biomicroscopic evaluation of the traumatized eyes

Abstract: Purpose To review causes for performing an ultrasound biomicroscopic (UBM) examination in traumatized eyes, to present common UBM findings of 109 eyes with a history of ocular trauma and to compare these findings according to the type of the trauma. Materials and methods A total of 109 eyes with a history of mechanical ocular trauma, which underwent an UBM examination between December 1996 and April 2002, were evaluated retrospectively. All cases were classified according to the criteria of the Ocular Trauma C… Show more

“…Ultrasound biomicroscopy is generally useful for assessment of unexplained hypotony, 57,58 including the presence of cyclitic membranes 59 and traumatic cyclodialysis clefts 60 . UBM can be used as an effective diagnostic tool in cases of ocular trauma 61,62 . In cases of closed or open‐globe trauma, UBM can be performed with topical anaesthesia.…”

“…Comparative UBM and AS-OCT images in a case of angle recession are shown in Figure 9. Ozdal compared UBM with gonioscopy following such trauma and reported UBM to be diagnostically useful in imaging angle recession, cyclodialysis, zonular deficiency, lens dislocation and synechiae [56]. Kawana et al described the use of a prototype 3D swept-source, 1310-nm OCT to image post-traumatic angle recession [57].…”

“…Diagnostic imaging of ocular traumatology is performed using computed tomography, magnetic resonance, ultrasonography, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and OCT [7,8]. The first three diagnostic methods are useful for localizing foreign bodies, but UBM and OCT provide superior imaging of structures of the anterior segment.…”
