Ultrasound-assisted extraction of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid from Ligustrum lucidum Ait

Abstract: Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid are the main bioactive compounds in fruit of Ligustrum lucidum Ait, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiprotozoal, antimutagenic and anticancer properties. In this study, the ultrasound-assisted extraction of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid from L. lucidum Ait was investigated with HPLC-photodiode array detection. Effects of several experimental parameters, such as type and concentration of extraction solvent, ratio of liquid to material, extraction temperature a… Show more

“…A similar result was observed during the ultrasonic-assisted extraction of epimedin C from fresh Epimedium leaves (Zhang et al, 2009). Moreover, the extraction rate for a target compound was reportedly (Boonkird et al, 2008;Xia et al, 2012) high at the beginning of the procedure (first 2.5, 5, 10, 15 min) due to the large component concentration gradient between the solvent and raw material. The high initial rate may be explained by the compounds in the outer regions of the plant particle being more easily extracted.…”

“…UAE could enhance heat and mass transfer by disrupting the matrix cell walls to promote the release of bioactive compounds. Compared to traditional extraction techniques, UAE can increase extraction efficiency and can reduce solvent consumption, resulting in saving extraction time and energy input (Horzic et al 2012;Wang et al 2013;Xia et al 2012).…”

“…These medicinal natural products affect the pulmonary inflammation through traditional medication and experimental studies (Kim et al, 2011;Ram et al, 2011;Lim and Kim, 2012). LL has also been reported to have the anti-inflammatory effects (Xia et al, 2012). Therefore, we investigated the inhibitory effects of the LL extract on acute pulmonary inflammation induced by LPS and CSC.…”
