Ultrasound-assisted extraction of hemicellulose and phenolic compounds from bamboo bast fiber powder

Abstract: Ultrasound-assisted extraction of hemicellulose and phenolic compounds from bamboo bast fibre powder was investigated. The effect of ultrasonic probe depth and power input parameters on the type and amount of products extracted was assessed. The results of input energy and radical formation correlated with the calculated values for the anti-nodal point (λ/4; 16.85 mm, maximum amplitude) of the ultrasonic wave in aqueous medium. Ultrasonic treatment at optimum probe depth of 15 mm improve 2.6-fold the extractio… Show more

“…In a previous work, we defined the optimal conditions for the extraction of hemicelluloses and phenolic compounds from bamboo bast fibers. After testing, 2 h of boiling was set up as the optimal time to extract the maximum amount of compounds from those materials [25]. Taking into account our previous findings, we used the same boiling time to conduct the boiling of the bamboo.…”

“…Based on the researches of Higuchi and Wen [23,24], we recently explored the extraction of bamboo bast fiber powders and identified different compounds [25], namely, vanillic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, gallic acid, guaiacol and vanillin, whose molecules are involved in the lignin biosynthesis of bamboo along with the lignin monomers (LM) of coniferyl alcohol and sinapyl alcohol and some other mono- and oligomers of hemicellulose components of bamboo, as shown in Table 1 [25]. The findings revealed boiling and ultrasound as an efficient and green methodology for the extraction of the hemicellulosic and phenolic compounds from woody bamboo without the addition of any harmful solvents.…”

“…Beside of the inherent parameters of ultrasonic devices (such as amplitude, frequency and wavelength), their power and intensity also have a lot of effects on extraction process that they need to be optimized. Design and shape of reactor and also shape of probe can effect on extraction process [18].…”

“…The results showed that, the antioxidant activities of phenolic compounds extracted by UAE under optimized condition were stronger than LLE method. Recently, Wang et al reported extraction of hemicellulose and phenolic compounds from bamboo bast fiber powder [18]. The nature of extracted phenolic compounds depends on the used solvent and they reported extraction of hemicellulose and phenolic compounds using ultrasound without adding harmful solvents.…”

“…Recently, ultrasound-assisted extraction has received great interest in the isolation of polysaccharides from plants because of its high efficiency, lower energy input and environment-friendly [16,17]. The mechanism of the ultrasonic treatment is that ultrasonic wave produces a special cavitation effect in aqueous medium, which can destroy cell wall structure [15,18,19]. In previous studies, the application of ultrasound showed an effective effect on the alkaline extraction of hemicelluloses, the obtained hemicellulose with high yields [20] complete structure, high degree of polymerization, and high molecular weight [21,22].…”
