“…This could shorter the operative time to 120e150 min, reduce the suture knots to 6 to 8 and maximize the reduction of residues. In particular, ultrasonic dissection can provide minimal tissue damage and control bleeding during the operation [12]. In our study, FTS patients had less intra-abdominal abscess suggesting that they may have experienced benefit from these techniques [13].…”

“…Complete embolization of the arteries around the duodenum may also be ineffective and was furthermore anticipated to induce necrosis of the adjacent organs in this case. Emergency pancreaticoduodenectomy is not a common procedure due to the associated rates of morbidity and mortality (16)(17)(18)(19); however, recent advances in surgical techniques and improvements in perisurgical management have made it relatively safe, especially when performed by experienced surgeons in training centers.…”

“…However, the study results indicated that pancreaticoduodenectomy with ultrasonic dissection was actually as time-consuming as surgery performed with conventional dissection techniques. At the same time, there was no difference in overall morbidity and mortality rates, with a tendency toward advantages in tissue and vessel sealing [9]. Provided no other study analyzing Harmonic Focus has been published, we are of the opinion that - in pancreatic surgery - the operative time may not be a good primary end point for evaluating the effectiveness of ultrasonic dissection.…”

“…This increase in cost is a major disadvantage, although the impact on overall operating-room costs may not be so substantial [9]. Furthermore, the added cost of the procedure could be at least partially counterbalanced by the reduction in the number of clips and sutures that are usually needed for hemostasis.…”
