Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Hydrophobic Acrylic and Styrenic Polymers through Organic-Phase Photoiniferter-Mediated Polymerization

Abstract: As many physical properties of polymers scale with molecular weight, the ability to achieve polymers of nearly inaccessibly high molecular weight provides an opportunity to probe the upper size limit of macromolecular phenomena. Yet many of the most stimulating macromolecular designs remain out of reach of current ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) polymer synthetic approaches. Herein, we show that UHMW polymers of diverse composition can be achieved by irradiation of thiocarbonylthio photoiniferters with long-… Show more

“…While writing this Perspective, the Sumerlin group published the synthesis of a range of UHMW polymer classes in organic solvents, thus, showing great promise toward this direction. 43 UHMW block copolymers maintaining high end-group fidelity are also difficult to produce, although some examples were recently demonstrated. 40 It should also be highlighted that the characterization of such materials is not trivial, thus, limiting further research in the area.…”

“…We proposed this mechanism of polymerization to be similar to a photoiniferter polymerization. [35][36][37] However, using the electron beam to control chemical reactions is challenging due to potential radiolysis side products 38 and concentration gradients resulting from the spatially confined irradiation of the sample. Moreover, it is not directly analogous to reactions occurring during normal benchtop syntheses.…”

“…but different spacer groups exhibit different tendencies towards intermolecular crosslinking, and a satisfactory model accounting for this phenomenon has yet to be established. Finally, efforts at accessing architectures that push the limit of ultrahigh molecular weights 95,99 challenge current purification and characterization techniques. Water-soluble CCSs are currently able to be very quickly purified by tangential flow filtration, but the purification of hydrophobic or water-sensitive architectures requires the use of either dialysis (for which an appropriate molecular weight cutoff may not exist) or tedious fractionation.…”
