“…Metal sensitizers exhibiting such effects on PVG include: Cd 2+ ions for As 3+ and As 5+ , Se 6+ , and W 6+ ; Co 2+ ions for Bi 3+ , , Cd 2+ , Ge 4+ , Pb 2+ , Sb 3+ , Te 4+ , and Tl + ; Cu 2+ ions for Br – , Cl – , , F – , , Ir 3+ , and Rh 3+ ; Fe 2+ and/or Fe 3+ ions for As 3+ , Bi 3+ , Te 4+ , Mo 6+ , Cd 2+ , and Os 4+ ; Ni 2+ ions for Pb 2+ ; and V 4+ and V 5+ for Te 4+ and Te 6+ . A greater effect (additive or synergistic) was reported for several analytes when a combination of two metal sensitizers was employed: namely, Co 2+ and Cu 2+ ions for Mo 6+ ; Cd 2+ and Co 2+ for Os 4+ , Re 7+ , and Ru 3+ ; , and Mn 2+ and Fe 2+ ions for Te 4+ . The mechanism of the action of the metal sensitizers on PVG remains to be fully elucidated, but the latest studies dealing with application of electron paramagnetic resonance spin trapping techniques support the initial thesis that transition metal ions enhance the yield of highly reducing CO 2 •– during UV irradiation of HCOOH. ,,,, …”
