Ultra-broadband silicon polarization splitter-rotator based on the multi-mode waveguide

Abstract: We propose and demonstrate an ultra-broadband polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) on the Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed PSR consists of a straight multi-mode waveguide, an asymmetrical directional coupler and a bent directional coupler. The multi-mode waveguide enables highly-efficient TM-TE polarization rotation. The excited TE mode is then converted to be TE mode by the asymmetrical directional coupler. The remained TM mode is filtered out by the bent directional coupler. On the other hand… Show more

“…In the polarization diversity circuit, the incident light of dual polarization is first separated into two independent circuits by using a polarization beam splitter (PBS) assisted by a polarization rotator (PR), so that all the functional devices can work at a single polarization state. The divided polarizations are then combined by using the PBS assisted by the PR as a combiner. The PBS is one of the key components in the polarization diversity circuit for separating or combining polarizations.…”

“…Both of them require a structure with an asymmetric refractive index profile in the vertical direction so that the fundamental TM can be effectively rotated. For strip waveguides, a simple way to break the vertical waveguide symmetry is to use an upper air cladding [206,207]. However, a top cladding of silicon dioxide for protection is generally preferred in silicon industry packaging.…”

“…The typical structures adopted are asymmetrical directional coupler (ADC) [18], tapered DC [19], bend DC [20,21], and so on. For mode evolution ones, mode hybridization between TM 0 mode and forward TE 1 mode can occur when light propagates along the adiabatic taper or multimode waveguide [22]. It should be noted that all the reported PSRs are designed for broadband operation, aiming as universal schemes for realizing polarization-transparent photonic integrated circuits (PICs).…”
