Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of Bacterial Cellulose (BC) membrane dressings in the treatment of lower limb venous ulcers. Methods: we carried out a prospective, randomized, controlled study of 25 patients with chronic venous ulcer disease in the lower limbs from the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of the Federal University of Pernambuco Hospital and from the Salgado Polyclinic of the County Health Department, Caruaru, Pernambuco. We randomly assigned patients to two groups: control group, receiving dressings with triglyceride oil (11 patients) and experimental group, treated with BC membrane (14 patients). We followed the patients for a period of 120 days. Results: There was a reduction in the wound area in both groups. There were no infections or reactions to the product in any of the groups. Patients in the BC group showed decreased pain and earlier discontinuation of analgesic use. Conclusion: BC membrane can be used as a dressing for the treatment of varicose ulcers of the lower limbs.

ABSTRACT:Vasculogenic ulcers may be of arterial, venous or arteriovenous (mixed) origin and compromise the dermis and epidermis, and may also affect deeper tissues, characterized by a chronic, painful and slow healing process, which impacts the quality of life and in the mental, physical and social aspects of the affected persons, thus leading them to the total dependence of the health service. The objective was to characterize the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients with vasculogenic ulcers. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study developed at the Surgical Clinic in an Emergency Hospital in the Northeastern region of Brazil, with 38 patients with vasculogenic ulcers, from September to October 2016. Data were collected in patients' records and confirmed by interview. As a result of the sociodemographic profile, the majority were male (55.3%), brown (55.3%), elderly and adult (50%, each), married (50%), with income up to a minimum wage (81.6%), retirees (55.3%), attended the elementary school (57.9%) and all were from the Northeastern region of Brazil. Clinically, 34.2% had peripheral angiopathy, venous ulcers (50%), Arterial Hypertension and Diabetes Melitus (50%). The most frequent surgical procedure was amputation of the limb affected by the ulcer (55.3%). Knowing the profile of the clientele is fundamental for making better decisions and defining a clinical reasoning more appropriate to patients, which should be conducted in a comprehensive manner by the nursing team.

Objective: to verify the level of self-esteem of people with venous ulcer and its relationship with sociodemographic, care and clinical characteristics. Methods: cross-sectional study with 44 patients with venous ulcers assisted in primary health care and evaluated using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. The t-test was to compare means of the scale scores in relation to sociodemographic, care and clinical characteristics. Results: the mean self-esteem was 9.3 (± 5.1). The variables that showed association with self-esteem were: married/common-law married patients (p=0.016), with occupation (p=0.023), using compressive therapy (p=0.040), under less than six months of treatment (p=0.014), and with small ulcers (p=0.010). Conclusion: the self-esteem of patients with venous ulcers was satisfactory/high, and it was especially higher among those with partner, with occupational activity, making use of compressive therapy, at the initial phase of the treatment and who had small ulcers. Métodos: estudo transversal com 44 pacientes com úlceras venosas atendidos na atenção primária à saúde e avaliados mediante a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg. Foi realizada estatística descritiva e inferencial dos dados. Utilizou-se o Test t na identificação de diferenças entre as médias dos escores da escala em relação às características sociodemográficas, assistenciais e clínicas. Resultados: a média da autoestima foi 9,3 (±5,1). As variáveis que apresentaram associação com autoestima foram: pessoas casadas/união estável (p=0,016), com ocupação (p=0,023), em uso de terapia compressiva (p=0,040), menos de seis meses de tratamento (p=0,014) e com úlceras pequenas (p=0,010). Conclusão: a autoestima dos pacientes com úlceras venosas mostrou-se satisfatória/alta, sendo mais elevada entre aqueles com companheiro, atividade ocupacional, uso de terapia compressiva, na fase inicial de tratamento e que apresentavam úlceras pequenas.
