Über Ätherische Öle Der Apiaceae (Umbelliferae)

Abstract: The essential oil from fresh roots o f Pastinaca sativa L., which were collected at several places in W.Germany, was qualitatively and quantitatively determined by GLC and spetroscopic methods. Terpinolene and Myristicine were identified as main components (together 80 to 88%) beside minor amounts of other monoand sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. The composition of the essential oils from different places didn't show any qualitative and relatively small quantitative differences.

“…In particular, they are abundant in a few related species within the Apiaceae such as wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa and H. sphondylium) (Bicchi et al 1990). The biosynthesis of these molecules is restricted to the developing oil tubes, or vittae, of reproductive tissues (Kubeczka & Stahl 1975, 1977, and their content increases during the flowering stages to a maximum concentration and then tapers off slightly during the green fruit stage (Zangerl et al 1997). The amounts of these molecules are reported to be phenotypically correlated with each other and with the furanocoumarins bergapten and xanthotoxin, phototoxic compounds that co-occur in the vittae with the esters (Carroll et al 2000).…”

“…Owing to their lipophilic nature, furanocoumarins need substances acting as carrier solvents to facilitate their penetration across skin or intestinal wall. This role is played by octyl esters secreted in the oil tubes, or vittae, of reproductive tissues (Kubeczka & Stahl 1975, 1977.…”

“…The root essential oil has previously been reported to contain terpinolene (40-70%) and myristicin (17-40%) as the main constituents [3][4][5].…”
