Types of mathematical tasks used in secondary classroom instruction

Abstract: This study examined the quality and types of mathematical tasks used for classroom instruction in an upper secondary school – gymnasium. All the mathematical tasks presented in nine different school classrooms during the first semester of the school year 2018/2019 were analysed against a 5D analytical framework. The dimensions of the individual task analysis were contextual features; the answer forms required; forms of presentation; types of required mathematical activity and cognitive demands involved. “…The results of our research conclude that the local context we present has a role in students doing mathematical modeling, which is a literacy component. This is supported by research conducted by Berisha & Bytyqi (2020) and Sullivan et al l. (2003), which states that the real context connects real experiences for students so that learning becomes meaningful and provides a stimulus for students' skills. This study also found that different students' cognitive levels impact different students' literacy abilities.…”

“…Tasks are essential in mathematics class (Berisha & Bytyqi, 2020;Demosthenous et al, 2021;Henningsen & Stein, 1997;Mastuti & Prayitno, 2023). Tasks are central to teaching (Chapman, 2013;Papadopoulos, 2020).…”

“…The aforementioned description on the important role of mathematics textbooks and tasks indicates the importance of designing mathematical tasks that can stimulate students' reasoning. Tasks must also be able to provide challenges and require students' persistence in the completion process [5], [25]. Challenging tasks are needed to trigger students' motivation to find the completion of these tasks [16].…”

“…Challenging tasks are needed to trigger students' motivation to find the completion of these tasks [16]. The active involvement of students in completing the challenging and demanding tasks is very much needed to develop students' mathematical reasoning [25].…”
