Local ecological knowledge of coffee agroforestry farmers on earthworms and their relation to soil quality in East Java (Indonesia). Biodiversitas 23: 3344-3354. Farmers manage their land-based on their understanding of biotic and abiotic factors, including soils, and how these factors affect crop growth and productivity. Their local ecological knowledge (LEK) is built upon intergenerational transfer and can use concepts that don’t directly match those of current science-based ecological knowledge. We explored farmer LEK related to soil organic matter management and earthworms in coffee-based agroforestry systems on volcanic slopes in East Java (Indonesia) by in-depth interviews with key informants and by surveying the concurrence of respondents, stratified by gender and age, with resulting statements. The term used in the local language for earthworms (‘cacing tanah’) included a range of species. According to 22% (n=48) of farmers, small earthworms (probably Pontoscolex corethrurus) are harmful to coffee trees because they eat the roots. Also, 54% (n=48) of farmers thought earthworms that eat soil cause a decrease in soil volume. However, according to the farmers, large earthworms (reddish-brown) can fertilize the soil by leaving their casts on the soil surface. Such worms are often found in coffee agroforestry systems. Farmers have little explicit knowledge of the activities of earthworms and their relation with litter as a source of food. Farmer knowledge of ecosystem services provided by earthworms can enrich current scientific literature and trigger a two-way dialogue.

Cacing tanah Metaphire javanica merupakan spesies cacing tanah asli Indonesia yang memiliki peran ekologis penting dalam ekosistem tanah. Melalui kegiatan meliang, cacing tanah berperan dalam menjaga stabilitas tanah, meningkatkan laju infiltrasi dalam tanah, dan mempercepat aerasi tanah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan morfometri panjang, berat, dan diameter tubuh cacing tanah Metaphire javanica dengan organ reproduksi. Sampel diambil pada enam lokasi di Kabupaten Sidoarjo, yaitu Kecamatan Taman, Kecamatan Sidoarjo, Kecamatan Wonoayu 1 dan 2, Kecamatan Gedangan, serta Kecamatan Sedati menggunakan metode purposive random sampling. Pengambilan sampel cacing tanah menggunakan metode hand sorting. Morfologi dan anatomi cacing diukur dan diidentifikasi hingga tahap tingkatan spesies kemudian dilakukan analisis korelasi PCA dengan SPSS v23. Parameter fisika dan kimia tanah yang diamati seperti suhu, pH, dan kelembapan tanah. Hasil analisis PCA menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang erat antara panjang, berat, dan diameter tubuh dengan ukuran lubang kelamin jantan, jarak spermateka, dan ukuran lubang kelamin betina karena memiliki nilai matriks korelasi berkisar antara 0,527-0,886. Diameter tubuh dengan ukuran jarak lubang kelamin jantan memiliki nilai matriks korelasi terbesar yaitu 0,886. Sedangkan, antara panjang, berat, dan diameter tubuh dengan diameter vesikula dan diameter prostat memiliki hubungan yang lemah karena nilai matriks korelasi antara 0,033-0,420. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara morfometri panjang, berat, dan diameter tubuh dengan organ reproduksi yang meliputi ukuran jarak lubang kelamin jantan, jarak spermateka, dan ukuran lubang kelamin betina.

Agriculture is a strong foundation of economy for many agriculture-based countries like India. In the economies of many nations, including India, where banana farming is quite important, agriculture is a key component. Musa Acuminata is the scientific name for the banana, and a banana tree normally lives for about 25 years. Banana cultivation typically lasts 9 to 12 months. The persistent threat of illnesses, which can drastically affect yield and quality, is just one of the many difficulties faced by the banana industry. This study focuses on overcoming these obstacles by observing the health of the soil and detecting infections in banana plants. The yield and crop quality of bananas can be negatively impacted by a number of variables, including illnesses. Developing an efficient method for spotting diseases in banana plants is our main goal, and we're also constantly keeping an eye on the condition of the soil. The main methodology we use for identifying diseases is SVM. In addition, we use procedures for soil monitoring to measure soil pH levels, minerals, and other essential elements that affect the health of the soil. The study shows good results in identifying diseases, ensuring prompt treatments to reduce risks associated with diseases. Furthermore, strong plant growth and increased yields are facilitated by realtime soil health monitoring. By tackling the ongoing threat of illnesses in banana cultivation through SVM-based disease identification and ongoing soil health monitoring, this research offers a vital contribution to the agricultural sector. The study shows promise in identifying diseases and guaranteeing prompt actions to reduce risks associated with diseases. Furthermore, strong plant growth and increased yields are facilitated by real-time soil health monitoring. This paper is focused on both types of diseases of banana plant and minerals in the soil.
