Type Appraisal: III. Relationships of First Lactation Production and Type Traits with Lifetime Performance

Abstract: Phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated between 48 type appraisal traits and first lactation milk production to determine the importance of appraisal traits in a breeding program from 5,024 records from the New York type appraisal program. Most phenotypic correlations amgng the type traits were near zero. Depth of udder was the appraisal trait having the highest correlation with first lactation milk (.27) and fat (.23). Multiple correlations of all appraisal traits with first lactation milk and fat … Show more

“…Various definitions of longevity or herdlife have been used in several studies, e. g. average age at disposal (H oque and H odges 1981; M c A llister et al 1987), number of lactations initiated in the herd beginning from first lactation (M iller et al 1967; H argrove et al 1969; N orman et al 1972; N orman et al 1981). Productive life has been defined in most studies as the difference between date of first calving and date of disposal.…”

“…Most previous studies have shown low correlations between type traits and herd life (3,5). In 1961 a type appraisal project was initiated by the Extension Division of the Department of Animal Science of the New York State College of Agriculture to study these problems.…”

“…It must be noted that these relationships are affected by the voluntary culling rather than health per se. Norman and Van Vleck (1972) examined relationships of first lactation type ratings under the Cornell type Appraisal System and first lactation production with lifetime producing ability. Of the first lactation variables, milk yield had the highest correlation with lifetime milk (0.34) and fat yield had the highest correlation with number of lactations (0.21).…”
