Type 1 diabetes in children is not a predisposing factor for oral yeast colonization

Abstract: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is considered a risk factor associated with oral yeast infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yeast oral carriage (in saliva and mucosal surface) of children with T1D and potential relation with host factors, particularly the subset of CD4+ T cells. Yeasts were quantified and identified in stimulated saliva and in cheek mucosal swabs of 133 diabetic T1D and 72 healthy control subjects. Salivary lymphocytes were quantified using flow cytometry. The presence of yeast… Show more

“…Regarding the levels of Candida spp. in the oral cavity, there are reports of not only no differences between diabetic and healthy children 3,5,33 , but also of higher levels in diabetic individuals versus the healthy population 16 . Although diabetes was found to be a predisposing factor for candidiasis 55,56 , the findings in the literature are inconsistent.…”

“…For children, a recent study found that T1DM did not confer a higher predisposition for yeast colonisation 33 . The contradictory results and the fact that most of these studies refer to adults justify the investigation of growth patterns of oral Candida spp.…”

“…Yeasts were found in both TD1 and siblings as Costa et al [19] found candidiasis in both TD1 and control populations. The absence of pinworms in the study population is synonymous with their non-participation in the development of type 1 diabetes.…”
