Two-Zone SMB Process for Binary Separation

Abstract: Two-zone simulated moving bed (SMB) systems with a storage tank were developed for binary separation. Simulations were done with Aspen Chromatography for the linear dextran T6raffinose mixture and the nonlinear binaphthol enantiomers mixture. The results for these linear isotherms show that two-zone SMBs give purities comparable to those obtained for a four-zone SMB with the same productivity and desorbent-to-feed ratio (D/F). At D/F ) 2.794, the purities obtained in a two-zone decoupled SMB for dextran T6 and… Show more

“…The most important feature of the MCSGP process is the possibility to use a solvent gradient for the elution, differently than other continuous chromatographic techniques that only work in isocratic conditions, for example Simulated Moving Bed [ 25 , 120 ]. This requirement is mandatory because the retention of biomolecules strictly depends on the mobile phase composition (percentage of organic modifier, salt concentration, etc.…”

“…A further reduction in the zone number down to two zones was considered in [42]. Interesting sophisticated modes of using just a single column to implement the SMB principle have been suggested recently [43][44][45]: they are based on using additional intermediate storage volumes.…”

“…Several configurations have been proposed in order to extend the SMB process to the separation of multicomponent mixtures, such as the separation of ternary mixtures by two or more SMB in series [21,22] and the use of a five-zone SMB system for the multicomponent separation of some sugars [23] and chiral molecules [24]. More recently, Jermann et al extended the concept of intermittent SMB (I-SMB) [25] to the separation of ternary mixtures [26].…”
