Two-phase pressure drop prediction in helically coiled steam generators for nuclear power applications

Abstract: This study considers the prediction of the pressure gradient with water-steam two-phase flows through helically coiled steam generator tubes, focusing in particular on the operating conditions of low-medium pressure, low mass flux and low heat flux typical of once-through steam generators with in-tube boiling adopted in small modular nuclear reactor systems. Twenty-five widely used empirical correlations have been tested against an experimental pressure drop databank drawn together in this study containing 980… Show more

“…Furthermore, the HEM method uses a much simpler way to calculate the FPD compared to other methods, such as Lockhart and Martinelli 32 . On the other hand, this method's capability for modeling FPD in coiled tubes has been confirmed by several studies in the literature 29 , 51 , 52 . Accordingly, the aforementioned intelligent methods are used for developing accurate and reliable models for estimating the two-phase friction factor, shown in Eq.…”

“…It is a reliable and effective method and has been used by many scholars to calculate the pressure drop of pipelines containing condensing gas [13] [14]. When the inner diameter of the pipe is 70 mm, the length of the pipe is 1500 mm, the inlet steam pressure P is 8209 Pa and the inlet dryness fraction x is 1, then the pipe temperature is 300K.…”
