Two patients with a complete proximal rupture of the hamstring

Abstract: Two men visited our Emergency Room because of a water-ski-accident. At physical examination, there was hematoma at the upper leg with loss of strength at extension of the hip and flexion of the knee. Both patients had a palpable gap just distal of the ischial tuberosity. Further imaging by sonography and MR-scan showed a rupture of the proximal hamstring tendon. Treatment was operative refixation of the hamstring tendons at the ischial tuberosity. Aftertreatment consisted of brace for 4 weeks after operation. … Show more

“…There has been much published regarding surgical repair of proximal hamstring tendon avulsions, especially with regard to the outcome measures used. A range of non‐validated heterogeneous outcome measures have been utilized to date, including return to sport rates [6, 7, 11, 12, 17, 20, 22, 27, 30, 35], isokinetic strength testing [3, 4, 6, 7, 12, 19–21, 25, 27, 35], Harris Hip scores [26], subjective rating scales [14, 22, 28, 31] and custom hamstring questionnaires [3, 8, 29].…”

“…After fi nal application of exclusion criteria, 18 studies were appropriate for inclusion. Acute surgical repair was defi ned as surgical repair of tendinous avulsion [14] within 4 weeks of injury. Chronic or delayed repair was defi ned as surgical repair of tendinous avulsion after 4 weeks from injury.…”

“…The hamstring muscle complex is one of the most commonly injured muscles in sports and accounts for 25-30 % of all muscle strains [22]. Proximal hamstring injuries often occur in patients performing water skiing sports, but also sportive activities such as martial arts, dancing, athletics, or bull riding have been described in the literature [4,13,21]. The mechanism of injury is commonly reported as an indirect trauma during sprints or jumps [29].…”
