Two novel thiophenes from Echinops grijissi Hance

Abstract: Two novel thiophenes, grijisyne A (1), and grijisone A (2), were isolated from the crude ethanolic extract of the roots of Echinops grijissi Hance. Their structures were determined by spectral methods, especially 2D NMR spectra. All the isolated compounds were tested for their anti-tumor activities against three human tumor cell lines, HL-60, K562, and MCF-7.

“…3) and C-1'' (δ 90.0), H-3'' (δ 4.31) / C-1'' (δ 90.0), C-2'' (δ 80.7) and C-4'' (δ 65.3) indicated that the CHCH 2 OH group was connected with the ynyl group, which was connected with the bithiophene at C-5. The 1 H NMR and13 C NMR spectral data of compound 1 were very similar to those of 4. The only difference was that the correlation between the methoxy group (δ 3.52) with C-3'' (δ 73.0) indicated that the methoxy group was connected at C-3''.…”

“…A few numbers of thiophenes were reported for their cytotoxic effects against human cancer cell lines. Echinops grijisii root-derived thiophenes exhibited cytotoxicity against HL-60, K562 and MCF-7 cells [ 106 ]. Notably, derivatives such as thioxopyrimidine and thiazolopyrimidine were reported to possess anticancer activities against MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer), and SF-268 (CNS cancer) cells.…”

“…The roots of Echinops grijsii , is believed to possess the effects of antiinflammation, detoxicating, and expelling miasma in TCM, and used to relieve the distention of the breast and stimulating milk secretion (Jin et al, 2008; Zhang et al, 2008). A thiophene derivative, 2-(Pro-1-ynyl)-5- (5,6-dihydroxypenta-1,3-diynyl) thiophene (PYDDT) (Figure 2) is isolated from the herb.…”
