“…The number of accepted species in Begonia currently stands at 1803 with Southeast Asia proving to be particularly rich and yielding substantial numbers of new taxa (e.g. Ardi et al 2013;Averyanov & Nguyen 2012;Chong et al 2015;Hughes & Takeuchi 2015;Sang et al 2013;Sang et al 2015). In Sumatra alone, since the first baseline count of 45 species was published (Hughes 2008) a further 25 endemic species are now known (this study; Ardi & Hughes9.…”

“…The inflorescence architecture of Begonia matarombeoensis and the long peduncles of the female inflorescences are similar to those of B. siregarii Ardi & D.C.Thomas, a species growing on limestone cliffs in Southwest Sulawesi. Begonia siregarii is an erect species up to about 1 m tall, however, and also otherwise morphologically dissimilar (see Ardi et al, 2014a). (Fig.…”

“…Material collected on recent expeditions to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has greatly improved our understanding of the diversity of the Sulawesi Begonia L. flora. There are 46 currently accepted Begonia species reported from the island (see Thomas et al, 2013, continuously updated), more than half of which have been described since 2005 (Tebbitt, 2005;Hughes, 2006;Thomas & Hughes, 2008;Girmansyah et al, 2009;Thomas et al, 2009aThomas et al, , 2009bThomas et al, , 2011Wiriadinata, 2013;Ardi et al, 2014a;Lin et al, 2017).…”

“…Forty-six species of Begonia are presently known from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (Thomas et al, 2013), 22 of which have been described since 2006 (Hughes, 2006;Thomas & Hughes, 2008;Girmansyah et al, 2009;Thomas et al, 2009aThomas et al, , 2009bThomas et al, , 2011Wiriadinata, 2013;Ardi et al, 2014). In addition, the examination of major herbarium collections (BO, E, L, K, SING) and specimen images from numerous additional herbaria provided by the Begonia Resource Centre indicates that there are many more species awaiting description.…”
