Begonia ignita (sect. Petermannia, Begoniaceae), a new species with orange flowers from Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract: Begonia ignita C.W.Lin & C.I Peng, a new species of Begonia sect. Petermannia from Sulawesi, Indonesia, is here described and illustrated. It is distinct from other species in Begonia section Petermannia by a character combination including a procumbent stem ascending only at the apex, symmetric or subsymmetric leaves, the presence of a pale band or maculation running parallel to the leaf margin, and orange tepals. A detailed comparison with a morphologically similar species, the Sulawesi endemic Begonia mendu… Show more

“…As part of our ongoing revisionary taxonomic studies on Begonia from Sulawesi, Indonesia, we have carried out extensive fieldwork on the island over the past decade. This work, alongside additional botanical exploration by our collaborators, has resulted in the identification of a considerable number of new Begonia species on the island (Hughes, 2006;Thomas & Hughes, 2008;Girmansyah et al, 2009;Thomas et al, 2009aThomas et al, , 2009bThomas et al, , 2011Wiriadinata, 2013;Ardi et al, 2014;Lin et al, 2017;Ardi et al, 2018;Thomas et al, 2018;Dayanti et al, 2020;Ardi et al, 2021). Additionally, two regional synopses of Sulawesi Begonia, focusing on southeast and southwest Sulawesi (Ardi et al, 2018, andArdi, 2020, respectively), have recently been published.…”

“…Several studies and extensive fieldwork focusing on the collection of begonias have been conducted on the Indonesia island of Sulawesi since 2006, including an expedition to South Sulawesi in 2009 organized by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Bogor Botanic Gardens. These surveys and studies have resulted in descriptions of 26 new species (Hughes, 2006;Thomas & Hughes, 2008;Girmansyah et al, 2009;Thomas et al, 2009a & b;Wiriadinata, 2014;Ardi et al, 2014Ardi et al, & 2018Lin et al, 2011;2017, raising the total number of Sulawesi Begonia species to 51 (see continuously updated checklist and synonymy in Thomas et al, 2013). Sixteen species have been reported from South Sulawesi (see Table 1; Thomas et al, 2011Thomas et al, & 2013Ardi et al, 2014;).…”
