“…Recently, three new species of Verbenaceae, namely Lippia krenakiana P.H.Cardoso, V.I.R. Valério and Salimena, L. raoniana P.H.Cardoso and Salimena and Stachytarpheta vianae P.H.Cardoso, were described from the Diamantina Plateau (Cardoso et al 2020a, b2020b, 2021a, b2021b, 2022). The discovery of S. meninii further emphasizes the high biological importance of this region, known for its exceptional plant diversity and endemism, despite having few legally protected areas (Echternacht et al 2011).…”

“…Since the 19th century, with particular emphasis on the ‘Flora brasiliensis' (Martius 1840–1840), significant taxonomic efforts have been made to describe, document, and update information regarding the diversity and distribution of the Brazilian flora, with many new species yet to be discovered (BFG 2022). Verbenaceae is no exception, with several new species described in the last five years (Cardoso et al 2019, 2020a,b2020b, 2021a, b2021b, 2022, 2023a, b2023b, Harley et al 2019, Thode and Bordignon 2019), most of which belonging to Lippia L. and Stachytarpheta Vahl, the two largest genera of the family, respectively (Cardoso et al 2021c).…”

“…The Northern portion of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais State has called the attention of botanists due to the remarkable diversity of plant species (Pirani et al 2003). Besides that, some regions were neglected concerning collection efforts, among them the Municipality of Monte Azul, where several new plant species were discovered in different groups of flowering plants, such as Verbenaceae (Cardoso et al 2022), Melastomataceae (Silva et al 2023), and Oleaceae (Zavatin et al 2023). As part of ongoing studies of Vellozia, we describe here two new species from the Northern portion of the Espinhaço Range from Minas Gerais State, Municipality of Monte Azul, located near the border between Minas Gerais and Bahia states.…”
