AdS 2 plays an extremely important role in black-hole physics. We construct several infinite families of supergravity solutions that are asymptotically AdS 2 in the UV, and terminate in the IR with a cap that is singular in two dimensions but smooth in ten dimensions. These solutions break conformal invariance, and should correspond to supersymmetric ground states of a holographically dual CFT 1 . We solve the free massless scalar wave equation on a family of these solutions, finding towers of finite-energy normalizable bound-state excitations. We discuss the intriguing possibility that these excitations correspond to time-dependent excitations of the dual CFT 1 , which would imply that this CFT 1 is dynamical rather than topological, and hence cannot have a conformally invariant ground state.Dedicated to the memory of Joe Polchinski

Correlation functions in the D1-D5 orbifold CFT

The D1-D5 system has an orbifold point in its moduli space, at which it may be described by an N = (4, 4) supersymmetric sigma model with target space M N /S(N ) where M is T 4 or K3. In this paper we consider correlation functions involving chiral operators constructed from twist fields: we find explicit expressions for processes involving a twist n operator joining n twist operators of arbitrary twist. These expressions are universal, in that they are independent of the choice of M , and the final results can be expressed in a compact form. We explain how these results are relevant to the black hole microstate programme: one point functions of chiral operators can be used to reconstruct AdS 3 near horizon regions of D1-D5 microstates and to match microstates constructed in supergravity with the CFT.

Bubbling the NHEK

We build the first family of smooth bubbling microstate geometries that are asymptotic to the near-horizon region of extremal five-dimensional Kerr black holes (NHEK). These black holes arise as extremal non-supersymmetric highlyrotating D1-D5-P solutions in type IIB string theory on T 4 ×S 1 . Our solutions are asymptotically NHEK in the UV and end in the IR with a smooth cap. In the context of the Kerr/CFT correspondence, these bubbling geometries are dual to pure states of the 1+1 dimensional chiral conformal field theory dual to NHEK. Since our solutions have a bubbling structure in the IR, they correspond to an IR phase of broken conformal symmetry, and their existence supports the possibility that all the pure states whose counting gives the Kerr black hole entropy correspond to horizonless bulk configurations. arXiv:1811.08256v1 [hep-th]
