Two effective methods for calculating water saturations in shale-gas reservoirs

Abstract: Water saturation is one of the most important parameters in petroleum exploration and development. However, its calculation has been limited by the insufficient logging data required by a new technique that further influences the calculation of the free gas content. The accuracy of water saturation estimates is also a critical issue because it controls whether or not we can obtain an accurate gas saturation estimate. Organic matter plays an important role in shale-gas reservoirs, and the total organic carbon (… Show more

“…In addition to methane, also liquid water (connate water and injected water/retained fracturing fluid) is present in shale nanopores (Li et al 2018;Xu et al 2017). When it comes to multi-phase transport in porous media, wettability-usually characterized by contact angle and surface tension-is a significant factor controlling fluid distribution and fluid flow (Zhou et al 2016).…”

“…Refer to the previous publications by Xu et al, 2017 andZhang et al, 2016, their developed method of the revised water-saturation-TOC presented a very good result on water saturation prediction in the Longmaxi-Wufeng shale, south eastern Sichuan Basin, China. The applied equation of the revised watersaturation-TOC is formulated as follows:…”

“…In this study, the Simandoux (1963) equation is used where a is the tortuosity factor, m is the cementation exponent, Φ is the neutron-porosity, R w is the formation water resistivity, R t is the true resistivity, R sh is the shale resistivity. In organic-rich shale reservoirs, the total organic matter content (TOC) (and conductive minerals if present) is advised to be integrated into the calculations to give a more accurate estimate of water/gas saturation (Xu et al 2017). The TOC [%] can be related to bulk density where A and B are gas and formation specific constants (Schmoker and Hester, 1983).…”

“…Since the unconventional reservoirs are usually complex multi-mineral formations, the conventional well-log-analysis methods are rarely applicable, because several petrophysical properties as unknowns may influence the measurements. Empirical estimation methods of water saturation (Archie 1942) and total organic content (Passey et al 1990) should be revised in the given exploration area (Bibor and Szabó 2016;Xu et al 2017).…”
