Two-Dimensional Polyfluorenes Bearing Thienylenevinylene π-Bridge-Acceptor Side Chains for Photovoltaic Solar Cells

Abstract: Two-dimensional polyfluorenes bearing thienylenevinylene-bridged malononitrile (PF-BTDCN) or diethylthiobarbituric acid accepting side chains (PF-BTDTA) have been successfully prepared. The polymers were fully characterized for their physicochemical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties. These polymers exhibited greatly changed properties with the introduction of π-conjugated accepting side chains. The enhancement of current density for the bulk-heterojunction solar cells was observed when replacing th… Show more

“…The rather high V oc values of 2-D BDT SMs are attributed to their lower-lying HOMO level ( Table 1 ). More importantly, the 2-D BDT based SM-OSCs exhibited much improved J sc and FF values than DR3TBDTOC12 devices, indicating the beneficial of conjugated side-chains in promoting anisotropic charge transportation in active layer 24 39 .…”

“…As presented in Fig. 4a, TiO 2 showed no visible-light absorption ability due to its wide-bandgap, while the pure polymers displayed a typical absorption band in UV and visble range and an absorption edge at approximately 650 nm 36,37 . For the 15%C1 and 15% C2 samples, the optical absorption region had a marked widening, which gived the credit to the the polymer.…”

“…These values are higher than the BHJSC devices fabricated with corresponding OBDT analogue donor materials, which is consistent with their optical and electrochemical properties. The higher PCE for BHJSCs with SBDT‐based donor materials over their OBDT counterparts indicates that conjugated side chains are beneficial in promoting anisotropic charge transport in the active layer . Since the V oc values of these devices are good enough, their poor overall PCE is mainly attributed to the low values of J sc and FF values and it could be related to the poor nanoscale morphology of the active layer.…”
