Two-Dimensional Nanosheets Produced by Liquid Exfoliation of Layered Materials

Abstract: One sentence summary:We describe a general liquid-phase method to exfoliate layered compounds to give monoand few-layer flakes in large quantities. TMDs consist of hexagonal layers of metal atoms, M, sandwiched between two layers of chalcogen atoms, X, with stoichiometry MX 2 . While the bonding within these tri-layer sheets is covalent, adjacent sheets stack via van der Waals interactions to form a 3D crystal. TMDs occur in more than 40 different types (2, 3) depending on the combination of chalcogen (S, Se … Show more

“…The NMP solvent for obtaining stable, highly concentrated (≈0.4 mg mL –1 ) BP dispersions was used in LPE in most of the reported studies 12, 67, 85, 91, 95, 118, 160, 166, 183, 185, 186, 187. NMP and DMF are well suit for liquid exfoliation owing to their relatively high boiling points and surface tension (≈40 mJ m –2 ) 166, 183, 188.…”

“…NMP and DMF are well suit for liquid exfoliation owing to their relatively high boiling points and surface tension (≈40 mJ m –2 ) 166, 183, 188. However, phosphorene, extracted by NMP solution, cannot be used directly either in the fabrication of electronic devices or for optical investigations because of its poor volatility.…”

“…The atomically thin crystalline, single layer h‐BN materials29, 30, 31 function as the intermediate layer and growth nuclei that provide not only an epitaxial intermediary between the substrate and the perovskite, but also as a cladding layer for better optical confinement in lasing due to its large bandgap. Furthermore, the h‐BN can also serve as a superior insulating dielectric layer (as compared to other layered materials like graphene, MoS 2 and black phosphor) for preventing shorts in practical devices 28, 32, 33.…”

“…Although the IGAs often bring on a wealth of innovative applications, their species are still only limited to layered compounds. In other words, controllable exfoliation of layered compounds is regarded as the exclusive way to obtain single-layered IGAs with few atomic thickness [7][8][9] , whereas the hard bond-cleavage of non-layered compounds enables the fabrication of their single layers with few atomic thickness become a great challenge. Despite recent progress in fabricating CdSe 2D sheets with few atomic thickness 10,11 , the difficulties in the removal of nonvolatile organic solvents and the occurrence of aggregation during slow solvent evaporation unfortunately bring difficulty to process them into devices 12 .…”
