Two-dimensionalXYbehavior observed in quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Abstract: The magnetic properties of a new family of molecular-based quasi-two dimension S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets are reported. Three compounds, (Cu(pz) 2 (ClO 4 ) 2 , Cu(pz) 2 (BF 4 ) 2 , and [Cu(pz) 2 (NO 3 )](PF 6 )) contain similar planes of Cu 2+ ions linked into magnetically square lattices by bridging pyrazine molecules (pz = C 4 H 4 N 2 ). The anions provide charge balance as well as isolation between the layers. Single crystal measurements of susceptibility and magnetization, as well as muon spin rel… Show more

“…These experiments were performed at 500 mK so that the sample is in the magnetically ordered state. Figure 5(d) shows similar data for 4 at 1.8 K taken from 70 . In this case, a single crystal was used and the magnetic field aligned both parallel and perpendicular to the Cu-pyz planes.…”

“…The kink in M (H) arising from the spin-exchange anisotropy is clearly observed with the parallel-field orientation. This kink occurs when the applied in-plane field is increased above the anisotropy field, H A [70]. At this point the moments can begin to rotate out of the easy plane, leading to an enhancement in the dynamic susceptibility and hence a kink in the magnetization 70 .…”
