The assembly reactions between a rigid imidazole/carboxylate functionalized ligand, 2-(5,7-dioxopyrrolo[3,4-f]benzimidazole-6-yl)benzoic acid (H 2 2-DPBB) and Mg 2+ (Li + ) ions led to the formation of two 2D layered compounds, [Mg(H2-DPBB) 2 (DMF) 2 ] (1) and [Li(H2-DPBB)(DMF)] (2) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide).
