Twenty years of research on silica‐based chiral stationary phases

Abstract: This review provides an overview of twenty years of pioneering work (from 1985 to 2005) of our research group in the preparation and application of enantioselective packing materials for HPLC. After a brief introduction to the rational design of a new chiral stationary phase, a detailed presentation in chronological order of appearance in the literature is given of the currently developed repertoire of chiral stationary phases and their typical applications. Emphasis is placed on the different synthetic strate… Show more

“…A plethora of interesting and potentially valuable CSPs have been produced and evaluated in academic laboratories in the past, but, because of cost, have never been realistic candidates for commercialization. A few examples from the La Sapienza group [22][23][24] may serve to whet the appetite for a future in which the microscale chiral HPLC, or chip-HPLC is widespread, and when synthetically complex and highly specialized stationary phases can become viable commercial products.…”

“…Another item of a large market is chiral stationary phases on which many review articles have been published. [73][74][75][76][77][78][79] Chiral stationary phases bear a great importance in pharmaceutical fields. A variety of chiral ligand modified silica particles have been commercialized.…”

“…The basic principle of chiral separation is that the chiral selector interacts differently with the enantiomers of a racemic or enantioenriched mixture to form transient diastereoisomeric species of different stability, and this fine distinction leads to the separation of enantiomers during elution. This topic has also produced a huge number of papers and the readers are referred to the previous reviews for more knowledge on this field [70][71][72][73] .…”
