Twenty year study of the occurrence of reovirus infection in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis in argentina

Abstract: We studied the occurrence of reovirus infection in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Argentina during a 20-year interval (1981 through 2001). Three of 2854 (0.10%) stools were positive for reovirus but negative for adenovirus, astrovirus and rotavirus. Children infected with reovirus were <1 year old; one had meningoencephalitis in addition to gastroenteritis. This study indicates that reovirus is an uncommon cause of childhood gastroenteritis requires medical assistance.

“…Moreover, it must be taken account the potential participation of reovirus in the ethiology and severity of the diarrhea illness. A few isolated reports associating reovirus with human diarrhea have been presented (Giordano et al, 2002). Therefore, the present report adds evidence that reovirus can be found in fecal specimens from hospitalized patients with diarrhea.…”

“…During the last 10 years the total number of cases of diarrhea in Argentina has ranged from 688,410 to 1,030,143 (mean: 838,768); therefore this pathology is currently considered a public health problem (National System of Epidemiological Surveillance (SINAVE), Ministry of Health). However, although many epidemiological studies have been carried out in order to know the incidence of viruses in ambulatory and hospitalized children with acute diarrhea [Gomez et al, 1998Bok et al, 2001;Giordano et al, 2001Giordano et al, , 2002Bereciartu et al, 2002], the presence of viral infections in gastroenteritis outbreaks and in adults has been underestimated in our country. Since the highest value of cases of diarrhea in Argentina was reported in 2004, in this paper we report the incidence of Calicivirus, Astrovirus and Rotavirus infections in eight gastroenteritis outbreaks in Argentina in 2004.…”

“…IgA and IgG responses are directed against reovirus outer capsid proteins σ1, σ3, and μ1 ( 67 70 ), and reovirus-specific IgA and IgG antibodies prevent viral intestinal infection and systemic dissemination ( 68 ), respectively. Disease associated with reovirus infection is rare and limited to the very young, who recover without sequelae ( 22 , 71 73 ). Preexisting immunity to reovirus is not a barrier to induction of immune responses, as demonstrated during clinical trials in which reovirus was used as an oncolytic adjunct to cancer chemotherapy ( 24 ).…”
