Twelve weeks of exercise modality in hypoxia enhances health‐related function in obese older Korean men: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Aim The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of exercise intervention in hypoxia as a novel treatment method for obesity in older men. Methods A total of 24 obese 65–70‐year‐old Korean men (66.5 ± 0.8 years) were randomly assigned to undergo hypoxic training (n = 12) or normoxic training (n = 12), and all participants carried out an exercise intervention composed of aerobic exercise on a treadmill (30 min) and bicycle (30 min), and resistance exercise (30–40 min) in normoxia, and 3000‐m normobari… Show more

“…HRV is a widely used marker reflecting cardiac modulation by sympathetic and vagal components and ANS activity; it is the most sensitive and reproducible marker among those obtained from tests for measuring changes in the ANS [20,40,41]. Further, HRV is caused by the interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system on the sinoatrial nodes.…”

“…Further, HRV is caused by the interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system on the sinoatrial nodes. Therefore, the HRV test is generally used in the field of mental health examination and health science [20,40]. Clinical application of HRV is mainly associated with the prediction of sudden cardiac infarction and assessment of progression of cardiovascular and metabolic illness [23].…”

“…The combination of Pilates program and hypoxic conditions might be an effective approach to improve musculoskeletal function and cardiovascular function while reducing the risk of injury by reducing the exercise load and mechanical stress. Although the exercise type is different, many previous studies have reported that exercise intervention under hypoxic conditions led to a greater improvement in the body composition, metabolic function, and cardiovascular function with lower exercise intensity than that induced by exercise intervention under normoxic conditions [12,15,17,24,26,27]. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the combined effects of Pilates programs and hypoxic conditions in the improvement of metabolic, cardiac, and vascular functions.…”

“…Obesity with weight gain due to the consumption of highly caloric foods has become a worldwide health problem ( Park et al, 2019 ). Obese individuals, in addition to displaying high body weights, also exhibit high weight to height ratios and a risk of dyslipidemia associated with elevated blood lipid levels ( Han and Lean, 2016 ; Camacho-Cardenosa et al, 2019 ).…”
