Many benthic species have been recorded to occur in the water column above the tidal fiats in K6nigshafen. They were either passively suspended from the sediment or performed active migrations. Concerning both number of species and organisms, active migrations were more important. The causes for these migrations range from (1) individual escape from a sudden threat such as predator attack, over (2) group evasion of local subpopulations to avoid environmental deterioration, to (3) habitat changing of entire populations. The temporal scales involved range from seconds to seasons, and the spatial scales from cm to kin. Such changes of distribution patterns have been demonstrated in juvenile molluscs and in meiofaunai copepods and plathelminths. Since migrations may interfere with many kinds of population studies in the field, new methods and concepts need to be developed to avoid and overcome pitfalls. As a precaution, the migration potential of benthic species should be taken into account in any field study including population parameters.

Populations of the Common European cockle (Cerastoderma edule) often have highly patchy distributions and variable recruitment success. One of the proposed reasons is that high densities of filter feeders and / or bioturbators are thought to reduce the success of larval settlement and post-settlement survival, but the direct causal processes driving these observations are not clearly identified and validated. Through combined field and laboratory experiments, we test the hypothesis that macrofauna cause decreases in post-larval density through feeding and movement activities. The effect of excluding the bioturbating lugworm Arenicola marina and filter-feeding adult cockles on post-larval cockle densities was estimated in separate field experiments at two locations from the time of initial larval settlement in May 2012 to late summer August 2012. Lugworm exclusion led to a significant increase in cockle post-larval densities whereas the opposite was true for adult cockles, where exclusion led to a reduction in C. edule post-larval density. Although clear effects were observed in the field, experiments conducted in the laboratory failed to detect changes in mortality or byssus drifting of post-larvae as a consequence of macrofaunal activity. This study demonstrates that the presence of macrofauna can have both positive and negative effects on post-settlement density of C. edule post-larvae. Thus the density, distribution and identity of macrofauna have significant effects on the density and spatial distribution of C. edule post-larvae during the post-settlement period. In soft-sediment systems, terrestrial sediment deposits may result in a marked change in habitat and benthic community composition. We conducted a series of experiments to investigate the behavioural response of juveniles of 2 bivalve species common on New Zealand intertidal sandflats (Paphies australis and Macomona liliana) to terrestrial sediments. Both species are able to actively disperse as juveniles and do so in response to 'unfavourable' conditions. In the laboratory, we investigated the ability of these potential colonists to burrow into thin (0.5, 1.0 cm) surface and submerged terrestrial sediment layers, and their subsequent ability to burrow into natural sediments. Field experiments assessed their response to terrestrial sediments that had been 'aged' in the natural estuarine environment for different lengths of time (up to 1 mo). Exposure to terrestrial sediment treatments negatively affected both species, with fewer individuals burrowing into the terrestrial sediment treatments. In the laboratory, burrowing was slower in the 1 cm-thick surface layers than in the 0.5 cm-thick and submerged layers, and the subsequent burrowing rate in natural sand of individuals recovered from these treatments was similarly affected. This latter effect is important as it suggests that settlement by juvenile bivalves on terrestrial sediment deposits can have a lasting effect even if an individual is able to find a more suitable habitat at a later date. In the field, dispersal of M. liliana away from the terrestrial sediment treatments was reduced, even after the sediment had been 'aged' on the sandflat. Depending upon the extent and frequency of disturbance, terrestrial sediments are likely to have important effects on the population and community dynamics of mobile bivalve species, and at a wider scale than that of their immediate impact.
