Turnover of postlarval bivalves in sediments of tidal flats in Königshafen (German Wadden sea)

Abstract: After larval settlement, juvenile bivalves may rapidly re-enter the water column and attain secondary dispersal by byssus-drifting. In order to estimate the quantitative importance of byssus-drifting, the abundance of drifters in the water column, their re-entry into the sediment, and their density in the ambient sediment were measured simultaneously over 3 months on a.tidal fiat in K6nigshafen near the Island of Sylt in the North Sea. Turnover of juvenile clams Macoma balthica and cockles Cerastoderma edule w… Show more

“…Inner cones proved useful for the better swimmers like ampliipods and cumaceans, and a terminal collecting device improved maintenance of the more delicate forms like small polychaetes (Armonies, 1992). After these comparisons, the one-net modification was used to collect drifting molluscs (Armonies & Hartke, 1994;Armonies, 1994). For stratified water column sampling, several nets may be mounted above each other in the two-net design, or several independent one-net gears are placed besides each other.…”

“…Byssus drifting has a high potential to create spatial patterns and density changes post-settlement. If certain conditions that vary in space and time trigger migrations, such as macrofauna presence, then spatial patterns could change significantly over a few tidal cycles (Armonies, 1994).…”

While the relative contributions of the different modes of dispersal to the recovery of disturbed areas is not well known, post-settlement individuals are frequently important in recolonisation after disturbance (Baggerman 1953, Commito et al 1995, Hunt & Mullineaux 2002.…”
